Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
For years, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. High School on Manhattan's Upper West Side was known as "horror high." After a violent school shooting in 2001, the school was broken up into small, specialized schools.
My high school, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. High School for Law, Advocacy and Community Justice was formed in 2002. With 87 percent of the students qualifying for free lunch and many students below level in reading and mathematics, getting students to embrace learning and coming to school has been a challenge.
Last year, I created a school newspaper with the work of a handful of dedicated students. We produced three issues -- one of which was mentioned in an article by The New York Times. The students shined in this new endeavor and loved seeing their name in print. For once, they were excited about reading, writing and researching.
This year, with the assistance of my principal, I created a Journalism elective for students, where they work on the newspaper and learn the principals of journalism.
While my students are learning how to better their craft, I would love for them to watch professionals in action. For this proposal, I am seeking the price of admission to take my journalism class of 17 students to the Inside CNN tour at the Time Warner Center in Columbus Circle, New York City. Having students see how the news gathering and reporting process works in a professional setting can only enhance their understanding of good journalism.
During the tour, students will also learn a brief history of news and see real CNN studios and journalists. It is my hope that by seeing professional journalists up close and personal, that the students will learn the different facets of the profession.
