“How come we stand ON the earth? I thought we were IN the earth?? “Why couldn't I live on Pluto?? “Why did they make mummies in Ancient Egypt?? “Where are we on the map?? My inquisitive third graders throw these questions, and many more, at me on a daily basis. They're desperate to learn about the world, but I need great science and social studies materials to teach them about it!
Third graders in New York State have exciting social studies and science standards to meet. In social studies, students learn about world geography and study specific world communities, such as Egypt, China, and Mexico. In science, a huge range of material from plants and animals, space and earth science, and energy and matter is covered. This is a momentous task even for a teacher with endless resources, however in my South Bronx elementary school, materials for social studies and science are rare. My classroom only has a set of old, out of date textbooks for science and a scattering of social studies picture books, many of which are not even on topics that third graders study. With all of the focus on literacy and math testing, students in under-resourced schools like mine are falling further behind in science and social studies.
I have been working hard to change this in my classroom. Although they began the year thinking the Bronx was a continent, every child in my class can now name and locate all the continents and oceans. We have roughly covered animals and space in science, and are just completing a social studies unit on Ancient Egypt. My students are so curious about the world and they LOVE our science and social studies lessons. They deserve comprehensive units in both of these subjects and they deserve to meet the standards that the state has set for them in these areas. However, without materials, developing units full of engaging activities, hands-on investigations, and challenging projects becomes very difficult.
I am requesting a series of geography, history, and science unit books from Evan-Moor Educational Publishing. Each book is a full unit of study and includes advice for teaching specific concepts, reproducible worksheets and activities, and instructions for experiments and projects. I have chosen books that will cover all of the major themes third graders are required to learn about in science and social studies, thus giving me the tools to open up the world to some very energetic eight year olds! Please consider funding this proposal and help me give my students the truly well-rounded education that they deserve!
