Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are an incredible bunch of people and wonderful students. They come from a very tough and very poor neighborhood, (in fact, the poorest Congressional district in the country), but this has not stopped them from being incredibly sweet, generous, and caring people.
Only 1% of our school's parents have a college education, but I know for a fact that my students are well on their way to attending college in the future.
It is a testament to their great attitude and tough skin. They are humble and take nothing for granted, but give so much back through the people they are.
My Project
We are requesting thirty-five subscriptions to Time for Kids, which is a weekly world current events magazine, that is age appropriate for my sixth grade students. The curriculum for our Humanities class focuses primarily on the ancient civilizations of the world (Egypt, India, China, Greece, Rome). My students love learning about the world, and have truly embraced the activities and material we explore in class. However, I want my students to also be reading about what is going on in the world today, the amazing things that people are accomplishing and the incredible solutions others are finding to help solve world problems. I feel that Time for Kids would be the absolute perfect bookend for our class. The focus on current world events would serve as an excellent compliment to our curriculum which focuses mainly on the ancient world.
