Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach at a Washington, D.C. public school in Petworth. The majority of our students come from low-income families and many of our students are English language learners.
As an extended day school in an urban area, students spend a lot of time indoors.
With little space to run around and not enough time in the day to play, yoga provides students an opportunity so stretch, breathe, and rejuvenate within the confines of the classroom.
Through yoga, students can enhance their physical health and socio-emotional wellbeing through mindfulness, breathing, and meditation.
My Project
Throughout the past year, I have completed levels one, two, and three of the Little Flower Yoga children's yoga training program. During this time, I have been able to learn about bringing yoga and mindfulness to the classroom via chair yoga, trauma-informed yoga, and mindful classroom management strategies. It has been such a wonderful opportunity. If this project is fully-funded, I will be able to successfully complete the mentorship program, therefore making me a fully-certified children's yoga and mindfulness teacher! As a result, I will be able to teach yoga to children and bring yoga and mindfulness strategies to children.
