First grade inquiring minds want to know! Hands-on inquiry based learning is how to engage current first graders.
My students are first graders that attend a rural Title 1 school in Georgia.
Our school is over 80% free or reduced lunches. Our school's budget has been drastically cut, like all other schools around the country. We do not have the funds to buy the resources that bring science to life for our children!
My Project
We are already using the Common Core Standards in Georgia. Project-based learning is throughout the standards. These resources that I am requesting will be project-based for my students. The microscope and prepared slides will give my students the opportunity to see things in their world that they can not see with their own eyes. The plant box will give them a place to plant their own vegetables and flowers. It will teach them responsibility of taking care of our earth and living things. The butterfly habitat will let them see a life cycle happening right in front of their own eyes in the classroom. These resources will bring science to LIFE for my first grade students.
The microscope, prepared slides, plant box, plants, and butterfly habitat will excite students' interest and motivate them to learn, encourage scientific inquiry, investigation, and experimentation, while requiring students to become active participants instead of passive learners.
