Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach kindergarten in an arts-based charter school in a high-need area of New York City. I teach a class of 21 enthusiastic young learners.
Our science curriculum consists of units of study centered around various types of science. The majority of our science curriculum is devoted to studying life science. Throughout this unit, we are expected to teach our young scientists about plants and animals. We believe that hands-on child-centered curriculum is most beneficial for our young students. Unfortunately, we lack the resources to purchase hands-on science materials for our students.
My students lack the vocabulary and experience to grasp abstract concepts without hands-on experiments and experiences. In order to help our young students engage in their science learning, we need real-life models. We need models of farm, ocean, wild, and forest animals. We also need books about a variety of animals and habitats and photos of animals. For our plants study, we need a classroom greenhouse and planting materials. We also needs books about plants and models of plants at various stages of the growing process. These materials will be useful for many years to come and will enhance the learning of not only my students this year, but future kindergarten students at my school.
