Our school is located in an urban neighborhood made up mostly of apartments, outside downtown Los Angeles. The school is public, Title 1, and serves kindergarten through 8th grade.
My students are bright, energetic, and inquisitive learners.
Reading, art, and physical education are some of their favorite subjects. They are all of Hispanic descent and many speak Spanish at home with their families. I try to give the students opportunities and experiences so they can see possibilities for their futures.
My classroom, as well as my school, is desperately lacking in current technology. More than 10 classrooms share ONE outdated computer cart. My students do not have daily access to computers for projects, research, online learning, data collection, etc. Unfortunately, many of my students do not have access to home computers either. This lack of basic technology is inequitable and thus putting my students far beyond their peers in other communities with more resources. This why I am requesting 4 Apple IPads. If my classroom gets these 4 ipads, each student will have the opportunity to use one daily, and be able to check them out for home use as well. In the classroom, students will use them to do mathematical surveys and create graphs of their results. In science students will be able to view webcams of habitats we are studying in class. By having these IPads the outside world will be brought into our classroom. At home they can use apps to practice their times tables or parents can use sites such as Khan Academy to help their child with their math homework.
