My fourth graders are ravenous readers who try to spend at least an hour each day independently reading books at home and in school. They need more books for their social issues reading unit in order to feed their insatiable literary appetites!
These kids are motivated, hard-working, and eager students who really love to read.
Many of them are English language learners who come from low-income families. They take school very seriously and love to impress adults with how smart and talented they are!
My Project
Reading literature has proven to increase people’s ability to empathize with others and to be more socially aware. A driving force in our reading unit on social issues is the power of reading to transform how we see others and to show us new ways to be kind, to connect, and to stand up for what’s right. I am so happy that my first LGBT books project was recently funded and I'd like to request a few more so that I can lend them to other teachers and classrooms at my school!
These books with LGBT characters will offer my students the opportunity to study of the roles and contributions of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender Americans to the economic, political, and social development of California and the United States of America, with particular emphasis on portraying the role of these groups in contemporary society.
