Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Nearly 40% of our incoming freshmen are reading significantly below grade level. In addition to great instruction, my students need books that will grab them as readers, showing them that reading can be phenomenally fun. This book is in great demand by my readers!
My students are hard-working kids who attend a large, high-needs secondary school located in an agrarian section of WA state.
Over half of our population receives free or reduced meals (80% of whom qualify for free meals!). Many of our students are reading up to five years below grade level. But with committed teachers and determined students, we've implemented a reading program that is making incredible gains. Now we just need more high-interest texts to keep our kids motivated and improving as readers. These kids want to excel. They're hooked on reading and simply need more materials to help them grow as young, literate adults.
My Project
With high poverty comes high numbers of students who are "at risk." In my community, one of the biggest risks is gangs. The true story of Father Gregory Boyle's work with gang-members in California is one that teaches a great lesson about the dangers of gangs, but more importantly, the myriad possibilities for kids to avoid or get out of gangs and contribute to their communities. Many of my students have heard about this book, and they're begging to read it. Some of my kids are currently involved with gangs, and a book like this could be the exact thing to get them thinking, and then moving out of the gang lifestyle all the while improving their reading abilities. I know that this book will hit home with many kids and think it no exaggeration to say that it will change and/or save the lives of some of my students.
Donations to this project will ensure that my students have texts to keep them engaged in reading and developing as literate adults.
In my community, that is one of the key contributors to students avoiding gang involvement, poverty and incarceration. But trying to improve kids' reading abilities with texts that are not meaningful to their lives isn't successful. THIS text is meaningful, and will not only motivate them as readers, but will force them to consider their lives and their futures!
