Children can become anything they want to be if we give them what they need to succeed. Our students love to read, but we are missing some extremely valuable genres in our school. Historical Fiction is one of those. I can't wait to show my 4th graders how exciting history can be!
The students at our school are amazing.
They are excited and want to learn! Most come from single income families, many of which are military families. The parents and students are close knit and willing to do everything they can for you. Unfortunately, many of these families are barely getting by. Most will do everything they can to help with their time, but don't have the resources available to provide materials for our school. My students will really benefit from learning about history in a fun way. I know my excitement for historical fiction will infect them also!
My Project
The books I am requesting will help fill a void in our classroom library. I am scheduled to have about 34 fourth graders in my class this year. Currently I only have 9 historical fiction books. The books that I am requesting will enable us to have a great selection of historical fiction books for my students to choose from. I can't wait to watch them experience the excitement of historical fiction texts. These books will give them a chance to learn more about the amazing, scary and unbelievable things that have happened in this world they are growing up in.
I think it is so important for children to experience a wide variety of text structures in school.
Typically, students tend to gravitate toward the fantasy genre. This makes sense because the fantasy/fictional genre is readily available, highly publicized, and arguably, the most engaging! The Historical fiction genre is often overlooked in the younger grades. No more! With your help, I can bring the world of historical fiction to my students!
