My students need listening center books and bean bag chairs to make reading fun! My children love to lay on pillows and comfy bean bag chairs while reading.
The challenges that face my children are many come from single parent homes and struggle to make ends meet. Because of this, Briarwood has had an increase in free and reduced lunch. More children have also relied on taking food backpacks home to help with their food supply throughout the weekend. It is not uncommon for me to have to purchase back to school supplies for a couple of children in my classroom at the beginning of the year and to replenish their supplies as the year goes on. When the May 20th tornado hit, at least five of my children lost their homes as well as their school.
The children that attend Briarwood are a mixture of middle to low income.
A lot of my children have multiple siblings and are used to wearing hand me down clothes that have been passed down. The children that attend Briarwood often live in rent houses and are forced to live pay check to pay check. The children rely on the teacher to teach them. They get very little educational support from their parents at home. We would provide free after school tutoring for those children who would benefit from it while their parents finished up their work day.
My Project
The listening center books will help with fluency for my students. The students will listen to the story and then re-read the story togther building their fluency and comprehension. The students in my class love to lay on pillows and bean bag chairs to read. Being able to provide these items for my students will allow them to enjoy reading and to grow as learners!
If my donation request is accepted it will make a difference by providing a way to help the children in my class have fun while reading.
