You know the feeling...standing in front of hundreds of books at the library and not having a clue which one to choose. This is a challenge my middle school students face all the time in my classroom.
I am very lucky to teach reading to a fantastic group of 7th and 8th graders at Stone Scholastic Academy, a Chicago Public School in the city's Rogers Park neighborhood. Stone is an incredibly diverse school and is a example of effective public education. I teach 120 students daily and have a classroom library full of excellent novels and non-fiction books that all of my students are able to check out.
Despite having such wonderful resources available to them, my students are often overwhelmed by the number of book spines in front of them and are never sure which books are the "good books". By aquiring a display rack and several books easels, the students will be able to easily see the covers of the books that are new and exciting to them. I plan to have the students be the ones to select the books to be displayed so that they feel that their opinions and ideas count. I have also requested library checkout card, card pockets, and a date stamper to help keep track of all the books the students check out.
As the only reading teacher for 7th and 8th graders at Stone, my hope is to instill in all of them a love for exellent literature. By receiving these classroom library materials, I am confident that they will be well on their way to having a true love for books and reading.
