Ms. Niemela from Chula Vista CA is requesting Books through DonorsChoose, the #1 classroom funding site for teachers.

Help! Beloved, Worn-out Novels Won't Survive Another Year!

My students need a class set (30 copies) of Beverly Cleary's novel Dear Mr. Henshaw to replace the tattered, falling apart paperback copies that are now unusable.

My Students

Remember that first novel you read where you couldn't wait to turn the next page, or couldn't believe that characters could be like you? Each year, my 4th graders read Dear Mr. Henshaw together; absolutely falling in love with this chapter book and launching a new relationship with reading.

I teach a great group of 4th graders who live in a low-income, urban setting in Southern California.

Many come from families with lower levels of education and do not see reading modeled at home. Several of my students have never even been to the public library, let alone have books at home to read. Most of my students are English language learners, and a majority of my class currently reads 2 years below grade level. Therefore, our school has been focused on reading comprehension and has shown great gains in this area in recent years! I work hard to model and inspire them to develop a genuine interest in, and love for reading. When they enter my classroom, many students have never enjoyed reading, let alone read a chapter book! As a school, we know that each and every student can achieve. While we are proud of our growth, we are working even harder to advance our students. We just need the supplies that will help us make this possible!

My Project

My current class set of Dear Mr. Henshaw has been lovingly read to the extent that pages have fallen out, and covers and bindings are undone! I am requesting 30 new hardback copies so that my students, and students for years to come, will be able to enjoy this novel. I use this book in my language arts block and developed an accompanying literature unit where I teach vocabulary development in context, and many 4th grade literacy standards such as analyzing character traits and summarizing. This book is at the 4th grade level, and I model the reading aloud as they follow along together. This highly endearing and engaging story fascinates my students! They learn to relate with the character and hate to stop reading each day! Students at every level access this grade level text and work with the story in partners and eventually independently. I have seen this book transform them from readers of required short stories to eager seekers of literature and novels they can connect with!

This book has been crucial to the success of my past students.

The condition of my current paperbacks has made it so these books are practically unusable, despite my attempts to repair them! Literacy is essential for students to have successful, educated futures filled with opportunities. Your donation to this project will reach students for many years over many classes who'll find reading enjoyable, discover themselves as readers, and generate the experience and passion to learn. Thank you!
