Good basketball players practice basketball. Good surfers practice surfing to improve their skills. Good readers need to practice reading. My students desperately need to read more. What better way to encourage reading by using a weekly magazine, using big bold photographs and eye catching text.
My students are wonderful!
They work hard and want to please. They are presently learning to read. The only practice they get is when they are in class. They will not read at home for many reasons; their parents can't read and they have no reading materials at home. They are living in families that cannot provide basic necessities. They come to school dirty, hungry and without supplies. They need someone to look out for them, to treat them special.
My Project
The item I am requesting is a way for you to reach out and help those students who want to learn to read, but never have enough support. The weekly readers provide new worlds of knowledge for these students. They have breath-taking photographs and exciting stories about things happening in our world. They encourage the students to want to read...even the students that are struggling. They love to hear about far-away places and interesting people. The weekly readers provide all that and more.
This project is so important because we want our first graders to be successful readers.
If reading is a chore, if reading too difficult, it can frustrate a student and turn them off from learning and school. We want students to love reading and exploring new information. We want them to share their school experiences with their families.
Help to make connections between home and school. These weekly readers will do all this and more for my students.
