Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school is classified as Title I. Most of my students come from low-income households and the majority of our student population is either ELL or speaks Spanish as a second language. We implement a rigorous instructional schedule wherein a lot of our day focuses on Reading, Writing, and Math.
My energetic first graders walk into the classroom every day eager to learn and discover more and having an inviting warm space for them to do that makes them more productive.
They especially love our reading block time where they get to enjoy reading from our vast collection of books available to them.
My Project
Right now my classroom library consists of 2 old, bent and over used bookshelves. I can’t even fit all the books I have on them and find myself storing them in the closet where they collect dust and my students cannot use them. This new storage unit will serve as a nice sturdy place to store all the library books I have accumulated and make them more accessible for my students.
Reading is a major part of the 1st grade curriculum.
Students must go from learning simple patterned books to reading chapter books by the end of the school year. In order to accomplish this I teach Readers Workshop. Students go book shopping every week to choose 10 new books to practice reading independently. They must have access to a countless number of books. Using this storage unit will help the students have access to even more books to help them with their reading.
