My students are culturally diverse, energetic, and ambitious. They attend a K-8 urban school in Ohio with nearly 500 students in attendance. We are a high-poverty school with a 100% free/reduced lunch rate. With the recent impact of Covid-19, we are all being faced with challenges that make both teaching and learning more difficult.
My Project
Each year our school creates holiday baskets for some of our families. Each teacher nominates one family from their class to receive a basket. Families are gifted items that they may not otherwise be able to afford like band-aids, toilet paper, wet wipes, and chapstick.
Families are provided a holiday basket with personal care items and hygiene products which are fully funded on donations from our staff and/or community partners.
On the first day of the holiday break, our staff hand delivers each basket to nearly 25 families. To see the faces of our students and families light up is pure joy. It makes the effort of coordinating and assembling the baskets worth all of the effort!
