Help American Sign Language Students Find Success!
Help me give my students the technology they need to advance in their acquisition of American Sign Language: 15 classroom laptops and 1 classroom video camera.
Every day my students choose to be here. Yes, they have to come to school, but they come to my class because they want to. They choose American Sign Language as their World Language class because they see how it will apply to their lives, present and future. Some of them have Deaf family members they want to connect with. Some interact with Deaf people at their jobs and want to serve them better. Some want to go into Special Education fields. Some want to be interpreters. Some are already fluent in Spanish and want to be trilingual interpreters. No matter their reason, they are committed and engaged. Not all high schools offer ASL, and my students have taken full advantage of this opportunity.
With their enthusiasm and respect for ASL and the Deaf Community, they are a daily symbol to me of how language classes are an integral part of creating bridges in our world.
Regardless of their future involvement with the Deaf community, they have acquired and honed skills in my class that will be transferable in an array of settings.
My Project
My class needs 15 laptops with webcam and video editing capabilities. The field of American Sign Language (ASL) Education is commonly utilizing video platforms for effective and efficient feedback, grading, and critiquing of video assignments. This would allow students to engage in creating videos and sharing work with me and each other to showcase their progressing language skills. In addition, it will help us create video portfolios to track their progress through their three years in my class.
As a class, we have been enjoying creating fun original characters and stories in ASL.
We need a videocamera for student use to record and share these creative and educational endeavors with their families and our school community.
The laptops and videocamera will make a difference in my students' learning by giving them access to standardized technology, video production skills, and valuable, real-time, personalized feedback to enhance their acquisition of ASL.
The laptops and video camera are available from BestBuy.
