My Students
This year I've been especially focused on providing my students with opportunities to enrich their learning outside of the classroom. In April, I am sponsoring a trip for some of our students to travel to Spain for eight days! But to reach our goal, we will need your support.
As a Spanish teacher on the South Side of Chicago, I am constantly trying to think of ways to engage my students and to invest them in learning another language.
Our students' neighborhoods are not integrated racially, socially, or economically, so their community generally lacks the diversity that would expose them to other cultures and other worlds. I am therefore challenged to find other ways to introduce them to a world outside of their own. Ultimately, I strive to convince my students that Spanish is relevant to their lives. Because our school district is unable to provide any financial support for our trip and 99% of the students in our school are from low-income households, we are fundraising the entire cost of the trip. Our students have been working hard to fundraise the money, but two students will need to fundraise 100% of the cost to be able to participate.
My Project
We will be traveling to Barcelona, Zaragoza, and Madrid, visiting sites like the La Sagrada Familia and the Royal Palace. They've been studying artists like Picasso and Gaudi in the classroom, and now they have a chance to see their breathtaking work in person. They've been studying foods and restaurant vocabulary, and now they have the chance to actually sit down in a Spanish cafe and order a coffee and pastry! They will be able to interact with the people of Spain using what they have learned in the classroom. None of these students have ever been out of the country, and a lot of them have never left Illinois, so you can imagine how excited they are to get their passports, and how anxious they are getting about traveling in Spain!
