Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our student is a high-functioning autistic student in his senior year of high school. He is a very talented, passionate drummer who has studied all of the various drumming techniques, and practices in a small room on a rubber drum pad whenever he has free time during school. Our school is in Boston, within walking distance to Berklee College of Music. Berklee has a program for Boston Public Schools students with special learning needs. Our talented special needs student would thrive in their after-school program, where he would meet and collaborate with other students like him, and could take his study of music to another level. The only thing he needs is his own drum kit.
My Project
If our student has his own drum kit he can participate in this special program at the Berklee College of Music Institute For Arts Education and Special Needs.
The Berklee College Institute For Arts Education and Special Needs offers students like ours an opportunity to collaborate with other students with special needs in musical ensembles.
Many students with autism have particular interests that they pursue and study until they become subject matter experts, but they struggle with sharing their passion with others and collaborating because of the nature of their special needs. The program at Berklee College specifically targets those challenges that special needs students face while they become more skilled in their particular musical instrument. The program offers special needs students the recognition of their unique talents as well as their unique struggles.
