Help a Physically Disabled Child Expand His Musical Horizons - Part 2
The cost of four Big Mack Musical Devices from Ablenet, Inc. is $719, including shipping and <a target="new" href="http://www.donorschoose.org/html/fulfillment.htm" onclick="g_openWindow('http://www.donorschoose.org/html/fulfillment.htm', 300, 800, 'fulfillwindow');return false;">fulfillment</a>.
I am a music teacher in a New York City Public School that serves high school aged students facing many challenges including physical disabilities and language impairments. In order to help students express their needs and feelings and to enable them to participate in groups our school relies on augmentative communication devices such as "Big Macks" and a system of picture symbols using "Mayor/Johnson Symbols."
I would like to expand my use of "Big Macks." I have programmed percussion rhythmic beats and melodic phrases. When the student strikes the device with his hand or his head switch the sound is reproduced and he becomes an active member of our band. For example, if one of our students plays the key note of a progression using the device, another student can then play and accompany him. He can now be part of a performing group of general education or less physically challenged students.
Thanks to a previous grant I was able to present a school performance using these devices.
I am hoping to acquire additional Big Macks that will enable our students to participate and give them more control over their environment.
Thank you for whatever help you can give.
