Help me give my students four, 3/4-sized violins with matching shoulder rests. These instruments could help my students develop a skill for which there are many college scholarships.
Our middle school, along with nearby elementary schools, services some of the lowest income students in Dubuque, IA. Most of them qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, and have no chance of renting an instrument for music lessons. Opportunities tend to come to these students only when the district, or donors, provide assistance.
Dubuque has a high-level symphony orchestra that performs regularly for fifth graders, inspiring many of them to join orchestra.
This year, I have 35 elementary students interested in orchestra. Our district, overall, has over 200 students in fifth-grade orchestra and band! While these numbers are amazing, they also cause a problem for our district; we have more in-need students than instruments for them to use.
My Project
Our school district provides instruments to low-income students so that they may experience music performance. Currently, the district numbers are so high that we have run out of instruments! What a great problem to have!
I am working to build up my own school's inventory as my program services the lowest income schools in Dubuque.
I feel strongly that music can help these children improve in school, overcome hardships, and even earn scholarships to college!
With four donated violins, I will be able to send kids home with an instrument they can play. In middle school, these students will go on to become part of a large orchestra program. The program does more than teach music; it teaches community skills, organizational skills, and self-discipline. All that can begin with just four more violins!
