Help a Deafblind Student with Technology

Help me give my students the laptop they need to be successful with distance learning. Both my student and his para would get a laptop.

My Students

I have one student who is deaf and blind so the distance learning we are engaged in is exceptionally challenging to him. He's working the best that he can but there are certain barriers to his success. In addition to his disability, he's also an English Language learner.

Due to the nature of his disability, he has what is known as an "intervener para." And she's amazing!

She is supporting my student from a distance as well as providing him with translations from English to Spanish. Both of them have my gratitude and appreciation for their hard work during this time.

My Project

My student, who is deafblind, continues to do his best with distance learning but there are definite barriers to his success. He has a bilingual paraprofessional who helps guide him throughout his day. My student's IEP team is completely new to him, as he is a 9th grader. So we are all discovering the box that represents his disability. With this enhanced technology, my student and his para would have a more reliable platform on which to learn.

The laptop would help my student access the closed captioning that is available on zoom.

Our district has given our students Chromebooks, which are serviceable for most students. These laptops would provide greater access for my student as well as allow his para to support him more effectively.

With this technology, my student will learn how to review zoom transcripts, use translation apps, and have better read-aloud capabilities. Furthermore, we will teach him how to use a Chrome extension called Screencastify so that he can record himself reading out-loud for his teachers to review.
