Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students want history to feel real to them, but for so many, the past lacks significant relevance to their lives today.
My students are quite the diverse bunch of emerging teenagers, with backgrounds ranging from the United States and Latin America to the Middle East and Africa.
Their families represent a large representation of the city's immigrant population. These unique perspectives foster so much intellectual curiosity and liveliness. Despite this vivacity, our school in a community in New York has a high poverty rate, from which perpetuates a cycle of the achievement gap and overall low expectations for achievement. Moreover, since state standardized testing places much more focus on Mathematics and Reading, Social Studies instruction has been de-emphasized, especially in grades K-8, throughout our city.
My Project
Johnny Tremain is a renowned work of historical fiction, presenting the Revolutionary War through the perspective of a teenage boy. In addition to making progress in literacy, reading this novel will give my students an excellent opportunity to strengthen their understanding of the American Revolution by establishing a connection to characters to whom they can relate. Johnny Tremain will challenge my students to grasp social studies content through the lens of story.
Ultimately, Johnny Tremain will give my students an opportunity to learn and achieve in a way that may not otherwise be possible.
It is my hope that reading this novel together as a class will not only allow my students understand American History better, but grow a greater sense of appreciation, pride, and respect for their country and those who fought for our freedom.
