Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our class motto is "Never Settle for Less Than Your Best!" Sometimes, my students do their best 21st century learning on top of their desks, curled up on a couch, or while on the floor. I work with the most lovable bunch of twenty-two diverse fifth grade students.
I teach at a Title I school where 15 of my students speak English as a second language and three are new to our country this year.
Although my school is in a community of high poverty, my students come to school with a smile on their faces, always greet me when they see me in the morning, and never leave without saying goodbye. This group of students is truly determined to prove that they are smarter than a fifth grader! They surprise me with their knowledge everyday. As a bonus, I can always count on them to make me laugh daily!
My Project
The 21st century classroom is always changing. I have read so much research that explains that students spend 85% of their waking hours in a sitting position, which is not very healthy for their bodies or minds. Some of my students have the wiggles and simply can't focus, but it's not their fault. I believe stand-up desks would greatly help in channeling their energy in a myriad of ways. These resources would be used to aid students as they use their critical thinking skills to change the music lyrics of their favorite song from today's hits to words that have to do with a science concept we just learned, like the human impact on oceans. They would also be used when small groups use foil, newspaper, tubes, and paint to create replicas of volcanoes while they discuss how such landforms have affected history. Stand-up desks will simply come in handy when students are doing normal school activities with the added bonus of preventing attention and obesity difficulties.
My classroom is truly a home away from home for my students.
I don't mind how they do their best 21st century learning, as long as they do so productively and comfortably. I feel confident that stand-up desks will help my students be more engaged and perform better academically. My class is in need of a midyear revival and this project will help them be more successful for the rest of the year while losing some more calories. Thank you for thinking of my students!
