I have had the most fun teaching 6th grade students here in Kansas. They are ready to learn and be creative! I have students of all ethnicity, learning levels, maturity. It's crazy how different they all are at this age! You can hardly peg any one trait or skill on the entire group. I love to see how they grow over the year. One thing I do see at the beginning of each year is how eager they still are to learn, which after teaching higher grades is wonderful sight and something I want to permanently instill in them.
6th graders are the best when it comes to Language Arts; they still have that imaginative spirit and carefree ideas that create fun projects and memories, while they are also at that age where they ask questions and begin to discuss real world scenarios.
I love helping them bridge the two and keep the love of learning in it all.
My Project
I am requesting 25 copies of the book Hello, Universe. This book will be used for a 6th grade Language Arts Enrichment class. We will read it as a class novel, where students read aloud, work on collaborative projects, and hopefully have the opportunity to enjoy a good novel.
So many of the books offered today, although great classics, are outdated in terms of connections for the kids.
This Newbery winner offers diversity in cultures, disabilities, and home lives. The novel is also fun and relatable, challenges thinking, and adds real world “kid talk” with the use of text messaging and today's lingo. My goal is to find a class book that meets the IUG standards with our Acceptance and Responsibility Unit, while also showing all my kids that they can be represented within a novel.
