Our student population is extremely diverse. Over 40 languages and dialects are spoken in the homes of our students. Many are the first generation in their families born in the United States. As a group, they are excited to learn and ripe for new adventures in learning. They are inquisitive, innovative, and crave complexity on a constant basis.
Choosing the right books for children can open up a whole new world for them.
I want to inspire them to see the deep connections between the world and themselves. Fostering their love of reading with truly engaging text relevant to their lives is one way to ensure this. I want them to see that knowing about their world can make them powerful. I believe reading about the issues and people of the world will embolden them to become agents of positive change in their own community. I feel it is imperative for students to appreciate and value the differences among us all while making deep connections to one another. We will be celebrating a variety of families, traditions, and cultures as we journey through diverse texts.
My Project
I would love the privilege of attending HelloLitCon presented by Jen Jones. This literacy-focused professional development opportunity has been widely heralded as an inspiring and researched-based conference to jump start reading instruction. I look forward to discovering new ways to foster a positive reading culture in our classroom. I know my students will benefit from my growth as a guided reading instructor as well. I look forward to collaborating with other educators from around the country and examining new perspectives in education.
Nothing reinvigorates an educator’s practice more than fresh ideas born from meaningful collaboration.
The conference will focus on student engagement, meeting standards, providing rigor, offering choice, and helping students find their voices. I feel certain that the new approaches that I will be able to bring back to my classroom will impact my 21st century learners for years to come in the areas of reading, writing, and research. Providing my students with thoughtful and meaningful reading instruction is one of the best gifts I can offer them.
