I work at a high poverty Title I school in Maine. We have a wonderful student population from many countries and many cultures. We are also a school whose population has many challenges: trauma, poverty, some have experienced homelessness. In spite of this, our school has a robust and lovely culture.
I teach literacy and math to students with special needs, and incorporate art, mindfulness, games and social emotional learning into my classroom activities.
My students are cooperative and fun, and enjoy school. I maintain a balance of predictability and novelty, which works well for our class. I find that I need to always have a very full tool box of materials, strategies, and activities. I have diverse learners, with a wide range of experiences, and backgrounds.
My Project
As we embark on hybrid learning, each student will need their own supplies. I use art and arts integration to support math and literacy, and quality art supplies will allow me to continue to do so. Individual dry erase boards will support my students in both math and literacy.
Paints and colored pencils, and dry erase boards are supplies we use on a daily basis, and I want my students to be able to have easy access to these supplies in our special ed classroom.
Fun, quality materials will support our students as they adapt to the
new world of hybrid learning. Having a designated spot to keep their supplies safe and organized will make this transition to hybrid a little smoother.
