Hello High-Low! Welcoming All Readers into the Dystopian Genre!
Help me give my students dystopian novels on a variety of reading levels so that all of my students can access this genre, and not just my skilled or advanced readers.
I teach in a middle school with a fast-growing population. The culture of the school continues to shift, but the diversity only adds to the school and makes it that much better! Many students have opportunities to grow their learning if only we give them the best resources that we can provide. But funding is low. It can be challenging to meet the very different needs of all students, but we make it work.
My school has a supportive environment for creativity, especially if it promotes learning and will engage kids.
Our culture of reading is growing, but is still new and has not touched nearly enough of our students. Especially the idea of reading for fun or pleasure. We are continually working to make this change!
In short, my school is facing changes, but we are embracing those changes and trying to engage the community that we serve in order to best meet the diverse needs of our students. We are a family; we are passionate about our students and about learning. We have a journey ahead of us, but I believe that we will rise to the occasion.
My Project
Students will be using these books in our dystopian book club unit. As they read dystopian novels closer to their individual instructional levels, they will have discussions about what they are reading, and they will be able to better access the content of the lessons and the reading skills being taught. When a student cannot access the content of a novel because it is too difficult, it breeds frustration. We want to remove that barrier so that students have access to stories; students who can access their novels can apply the skills being taught. Students will also spend time writing about these books and reading supplemental materials. Variety is important especially at the lower reading levels because there are so many types of readers.
Giving students access to high quality books at their unique levels, especially titles that they are interested in and want to read, is important for the middle school reader.
This variety increases interest which engages more students in the reading process and improves literacy. This project will give my students more choice in what they can read, improving literacy and creating life-long readers.
