Heigh-Ho, It's Fairy Tales We Learn and Grow

My students need fairy tales to learn how literature connects to the STEAM design process while also learning how to effectively collaborate as a team.

My Students

Our school has a long history embedded into the community we serve. Students are excited to attend school where many of their parents and even grandparents went before them. I have an exciting opportunity to start a STEAM Resource program for the first time! When you walk into my classroom you won't see students sitting in desks diligently taking notes, but instead you'll see students brainstorming ideas, drawing images, building models, testing their solution, and more!

My students are spunky, inquisitive, and hardworking.

"I never knew school could be this fun!" a student shouted to a group member as they were working on a STEAM project. It is moments like these that push me to ensure that my students always have opportunities for hands-on, real-life learning experiences. It is wonderful donors, like yourself, that can help me to provide these experiences to our youngest learners!

My Project

When children are read to starting at an early age, there's an increase in their language development, like vocabulary. People often have a misconception that sciences and literature do not go together. By reading fairy tales to my students, not only will they be exposed to literature, but they will learn how the STEAM design process can connect to what we read. They will get to create the perfect bed for Goldilocks, a house that the wolf cannot blow down, a quick way for Jack to escape the beanstalk, and more!

An important aspect of learning is being able to articulate your thinking.

When students are able to recognize and apply prior knowledge, like from a fairy tale, they are more confident in sharing their ideas. My hope is that students will become stronger and more confident scientists through this cross-curricular activities as they continue to learn in the collaborative group setting.
