Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
As a special education teacher in a diverse, low-income/high-poverty school, I recognize that my students face several challenges both in and out of the classroom. The majority of my students come from low-income families, with limited resources. My students come to me with an enormous range of skills, strengths, and needs.
As a teacher that welcomes students of all abilities, I want to give my students access to our general education curriculum as much as possible!
Choosing to donate to this project would mean giving my students with specific learning disabilities, autism, other health impairments, speech and language impairment, etc., opportunities to be engaged in our academic instruction. This will enable them to benefit the most from their academic instruction and will help me differentiate lessons and activities while providing them with a quality education that meets all their needs.
Every single one of my students is unique and makes the world a brighter place!
My Project
As a special education teacher, it is very important for me to have the tools I need to differentiate instruction. Therefore, in this project, I am requesting Heggerty Phonological & Phonemic Awareness Curriculum in Early Pre-Kindergarten, Pre-Kindergarten, and Kindergarten. Heggerty curriculum can be used in addition to a curriculum that is already used in the classroom. Heggerty helps struggling students decode and hear sounds in a word. The lessons are short and engaging and will provide my students with the tools they need to be at grade-level reading. It allows students to learn the major components of reading such as phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and reading comprehension.
Strong phonemic awareness allows students to hear and identify the sounds in a word which helps them in their reading, writing, and spelling.
Heggerty Early Pre-Kindergarten Curriculum introduces students to rhyming, beginning and ending sounds, blending, and segmenting. It also introduces students to the alphabet and language awareness.
Heggerty Pre-Kindergarten Curriculum uses nursery rhymes to introduce preschool students to language play. Students will learn to isolate, blend, and segment phonemes. Students will also learn letter names and sounds through fun songs and games!
Heggerty Kindergarten Curriculum spends more time on each skill. The kindergarten curriculum covers all consonants, short vowels, long vowels, digraphs, blends, and rime patterns.
Implementing Heggerty in my classroom will help me teach important skills my students need in order to be able to read, write, and spell. All these resources will be used during small groups, whole group, and other settings throughout our learning day. These resources will be used for years to come!
