Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My school is a unique and special place. We are a fairly new charter school and our science inventory is limited. Our students need more lab opportunities but at the moment we lack some basic equipment. We share a majority of our supplies and need more! We are a college preparatory school that serves students who traditionally would not be college bound. Our school serves 636 college-bound 9th through 12th grade students from Houston’s North and East End communities. Our student body is 92% Hispanic and 8% African-American. We offer many services to the families of our students and it is incredible to hear parent and student testimonials. A majority of my students will be the first in their families to graduate from high school and go to and THROUGH college. This is a unique experience for me because I share my students' background. I am a first generation student and I am an alumni of the same charter school district. I know that my students have the ability to go to and THROUGH college and I am privileged to have the opportunity to help mold and influence my students as they pursue a higher education.
My Project
This is the first year that AP Chemistry is offered at our school. We have a growing science inventory and we currently have 2 functioning hot plates and the other 2 hot plates that we use during labs are kitchen hot plates. The hot plate/stirrer will be added to our inventory and will help even if we don't require heat because it stirs with the magnetic bars.
I would love for our students to have the opportunity to use this hot plate/stirrer while they prepare solutions and engage in a basic thermochemistry AP lab!
By purchasing the hot plate/stirrer and the magnetic stirrers, my students will know how to use the equipment when they go to college.
