This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are a lovable set of kids who enjoy life! Many come from difficult situations and a tough neighborhood where there are a lot of factors pulling them in every direction to do the wrong thing.
When they come to school, it is often times difficult for them to switch into learning mode without the right tools and materials.
As a school, we hope to help our students by giving them an excellent foundation for their further education. So many of our students are attracted to sports and these after school activities help keep them motivated, promote a spirit of sportsmanship and teamwork, and give kids a productive outlet after school!
My Project
My students and I are continuing on a journey to create a functional, creative learning space. Our hope is to establish a space of visual learning to help kids be creative and make connections to their learning. Only having art once a week can be a drag on students creative abilities, but by providing the materials in the classroom, my students are able to use their talents and create in their learning space.
A classroom's environment is an important indicator of student success, and a creative space where learning is visualized can take a learning environment to the next level.
The pens, colored pencils and markers will allow for students to create beautiful visuals that allow them to make deeper connections with their learning. The index cards will be used to increase vocabulary and post learned items and connections on our learning wall. The post-it notes will serve as student voices, allowing them to write their thoughts and opinions down, and compare them with other students in the classroom as a visual learning tool.
The sticky posters will be turned into large learning topics and serve as the core of students visual learning targets and anchor charts. For example, in the past we have used these for posters about the three branches of government. A great reflection tool. The salt lamps will provide the students with calm lighting so they can feel relaxed and safe in their learning space - a critical piece to creative thinking and learning.
Overall, my hope is to continue creating a safe, comfortable, creative space for my students where they feel like they are motivated to create and learn. These materials will help us gain that sense of creativity in the classroom!
