Our PreK students are learning mindfulness in order to enhance their social and emotional skills. This Social Emotional awareness will help them have a smoother transition into kindergarten. This fall, we will pilot a Kindness Curriculum, which focuses on mindfulness and gives our students the opportunities to practice and develop the social and emotional skills they will need throughout their lifetimes. We are part of a large, urban district where the families' incomes range from low to middle. Our district is experiencing budget cuts, and this affects the children. Our students come from a variety of international backgrounds. In this day and age, students are encountering many stressful factors and need self-regulation and coping skills. All children deserve a quality environment in which they are learning and feeling safe.
My Project
UCLA Research has proven that daily mindfulness practice improves well-being throughout the day. These books will help students develop their emotional intelligence and equip them with strategies for life. The relevant topics in these books address the themes of identifying and dealing with emotions, gratitude, and caring for our world; which is most needed in today's society. We have several students with special needs. This project will benefit these children and the classroom as a whole. By reading these books and practicing these skills with this Kindness Curriculum, students will benefit for a lifetime and enhancing the home and school connection.
