I have 20 amazing students in grades 5-8 who are brand new to the United States who are learning English. They come from 9 countries and speak 13 languages. Some are refugees who have never been to school before, and some are immigrants who have been educated in their country. All the students are on free lunch and come from low-income families. My school is considered 90% poverty. I am amazed at my students as they are rarely ever absent, as they love school and a safe pace to come everyday. Even though many of my students have gone through terrible hardships to come to the United States, the students are filled with smiles and excitement for learning and coming to school everyday.
My Project
My students who are all English Language Learners need headphones to be able to listen and interact with their on-line reading and literature programs such as i-ready and Razkids.
It would allow my students the opportunity to "hear" the English language and have access at their own individual levels.
By having this access, my newcomer students will be able to move and grow in their English development as well as be able to hear the English language being spoken correctly.
Additionally, the students could you use a comfortable rug to be able to have alternate seating when doing individual reading.
