Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are mostly native Spanish speakers from a low-socioeconomic level. Most live in government housing adjacent to our school. Many of their parents have no education beyond high school and some of them dropped out of high school. Their grandparents and other family members live across the border, and my students will more often than not go visit them on the weekends. Many times they have trouble crossing back into the US on time to make it back to school on Mondays.
They are eager to learn and maintain a very positive outlook on life.
They enjoy spending time at school and playing soccer or basketball on the school playground during recess and after school. They particularly enjoy family time when this involves a special occasion or party. Even though the majority come from broken homes or single parent households, they have a strong extended family support system.
My students are bright, enthusiastic, learners with a great sense of humor. I rarely have trouble with attendance or participation. Some of their parents work full-time and are unable to attend school functions or parent teacher conferences or PTA meetings, but they do want their children to be successful.
My Project
My students are LEP (Limited English Proficiency). They are eager to learn English and excited about the technology that helps them do just that. Our school district uses iStation Reading as one of the intervention programs to increase reading ability in Spanish, English, and Math (English word problems). Since many of my students are from low income families, they are often unable to obtain good quality headphones that last. This makes it difficult to hear and repeat the sounds, stories, and word problems being read to them through the program. They sometimes have to unplug their headphones altogether and just listen to the program at a low volume so as not to disturb others. This however is not the optimal use of the program. My students also learn English from other "read to me" programs such as Epic! Books for Kids. They very much enjoy reading the engaging, level-appropriate, and varied interest books on that site, and they especially benefit from listening to books in English. My students love to sing along with the music that some of these programs use. This helps them with English pronunciation. Headphones will help each individual student clearly and accurately hear what is being taught without distracting their peers. I love listening to my students repeat , sing along, and "answer" out loud without having to stifle them because they are distracting others. They benefit so much from practicing English out loud instead of only reading and writing it. While I teach small groups of students during guided reading, it will be a comfort to know that other students will be meaningfully engaged by being able to listen to the programs with ease and comfort. These programs provide the differentiation needed while my students work independently.
