Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
At our school, our diverse student population represents 18 different languages. We offer a newcomer’s class specifically for English learners with little to no previous school experience and limited English proficiency. In addition, our teachers work to provide a quality education so that all students—including English learners—can develop strong language, critical thinking, and social skills within a supportive and culturally respectful environment.
We are a STEM school, meaning our academics are focused on science, technology, engineering, and math.
Literature and arts are also taught daily. Our students have the opportunity to gain high-school credit in advanced placement classes, including Physical Science, Spanish and Algebra I. Both during the day and after school every day, we offer tutoring to support our students’ academic success.
We’re all committed to keeping families informed, partnering with parents in educating their child, and organizing events that connect the community and the school.
My Project
Working with middle school Language Learners presents a unique set of benefits and challenges. In order to achieve the highest level of success in the classroom, it's important to acknowledge these benefits and challenges and understand how they affect student learning. I want to make sure that I have all the materials and resources that I need to make a difference in my classroom.
My social studies classroom is one full of simulations, immersions, and reading and listening opportunities.
I would like to use the speakers, headphones, and headphone splitters so that my students can hear all kinds of stories from around the world. I want them to understand world history in the English Language and in their native language. In order to do that I must have multiple ways to communicate that language. I will set up different stations in my room that correspond to a certain time in history. Students will be able to do hands-on activities and listen to music, stories, and speeches that support their activities.
