Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach third grade in an urban public school, in which most students come from a high poverty situation. I have 31 students from Latino backgrounds who strongly desire to better their reading skills.

Because my students are largely English language learners, it takes a lot of work to develop their reading skills. One thing that they severely lack is varied exposure to native English speaking. For many of my students, I am the only English-speaking person they hear all day. Furthermore, many of my students are low readers, struggling with their oral reading, and constantly stumbling on words. As we have no listening center, I am unable to provide this valuable method of helping students better their reading.

To help my students gain reading fluency, I need to establish a listening center with CDs and headphones. My students will be able to hear native English speakers read texts, while following along in a copy of the book. They will benefit from using both aural and visual faculties, as well as from the exposure of both fiction and non-fiction books. Plus, the easy storage will help keep my crowded classroom organized.
