Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Recently, our school district added a visual arts class in the elementary schools. This is a great opportunity for our students; however, this addition was made by changing the students' music classes from twice a week to once a week.. Cutting our music time in half has made each minute within our classes a crucial opportunity for learning!
My students are amazing!
They are eager to learn and love having opportunities to experience and explore new adventures.
This year will be my third at DES. Before the previous two years, the students hadn't had the chance to play recorder or have a school choir. The former music teacher had two programs a school year. The kids didn't have the chance to perform for their parents. They love performing for their parents! They light up with pride and self-confidence as they succeed and their parents share in these successes.
Music is the start of a journey that all the kids can take: drumming in Africa, singing games in Europe, dancing in Latin America! The possibilities are endless. A new discovery is available every single day!
My Project
Glockenspiels are barred instruments like xylophones and metallophones. However, these smaller instruments have a special ringing sound the my students especially love. The German name of the instruments translates "to play bells". The ringing sound of the glockenspiel is a favorite among my students.
My students vie to play the glockenspiels that we have!!
Adding two more of these special instruments to our classroom set will allow more students to have turns playing these class favorites.
The glockenspiels are much smaller than the xylophones and metallophones. However, the students do not seem to notice that the glockenspiels are actually more challenging for them to play! Playing these smaller instruments actually requires much better hand to eye coordination than the larger instruments. Nevertheless, the students have so much fun playing the glockenspiels that they don't seem to notice!
Adding these two instruments will allow more students in each class opportunities to play. Further, by purchasing such fine instruments, the glockenspiels will be available for students to enjoy creating beautiful music for decades to come. With proper care, these musical instruments will be available for our kids - enriching their musical experience.
Ideally it would be marvelous if every student in our class was able to have his or her own barred instrument and not having to trade back and forth with one - or more - partners. These two instruments would make a great impact on our students' musical experiences!!
