I have a classroom of bright and inquisitive students. They enjoy learning and especially reading. Our Title I school is located in a rural area and the students come from a variety of backgrounds. They also have a wide range of educational needs. In my classroom, my students participate in a Daily 5 center program, which fosters literacy independence. Which is why this listening center is so crucial! These students deserve a chance to flourish and thrive in reading and to believe in themselves, that they can accomplish anything!
My Project
Audiobooks are a way to fully open up a love for reading in my classroom. Listening to reading enables everyone to increase their vocabulary, build background knowledge, increase their comprehension, and helps build confidence by being able to listen independently. By purchasing these tablets my students would be able to enjoy the Epic app, where they can read along with a plethora of age appropriate books and informational texts!
A listening center would especially help the struggling readers in my classroom.
Students who regularly struggle with decoding and spend the majority of their time focusing on sounding out the words become frustrated, because they retain very little of what they are reading. With a listening center, struggling readers will retain more of what they are reading, while also working on their decoding skills!
