The school that I work in is a very small rural school. The students I work with are at least one to two grade levels below their peers. I work with the students in groups or individually. Many of my students cannot read.
Even as struggling readers my students have sweet dispositions and are happy, loving, caring and hard workers.
They are happy children and love hearing a story read to them. They try so very hard and when they actually read a book they are all smiles. This is what is motivating me to get other resources to help my students. The students are from grades Pre-K-2.
I work with my students on math skills, reading skills , social skills and self esteem. Many of them are super quiet and shy. This is because they have failed so miserably in regular education and they are afraid to try. As a result of their past failures many of them have very low self-esteem Some of my students have improved greatly over the first semester. All are working hard to be successful.
My Project
Research has proven that using audio books in the classroom increases reading skills among struggling readers. My students are struggling readers and the audio books will become part of my lesson plans and curriculum. Listening stations will be placed in various parts of the room. Students will be given opportunities to get an audio book and sit and listen to the story while following along in the book. After the book has been read and logged in the student will answer comprehension questions in a round robin discussion.
Research states that using audio books in the classroom increases vocabulary, reading fluency, comprehension, and critical thinking and listening skills.
