We are using the iPad now to record videos/audio clips to discriminate speech sound errors for children with speech impediments and for children with social impairments. I don't have a keyboard for the children to type their observations and the quality of a recording is poor.
My wonderful students have a speech/language disorder and range from preschool to six grade.
Each unique child has strengths as well as challenges that may include one of the following: articulation, expressive language, social language, conversation, play, and stuttering.
My Project
Student will be able be a part of "theater." They will act out structured roles/activities and/or be a part of unstructured conversation, all in an effort to capture it on video. Once the video is recorded, it will be played back as a teaching model to highlight the lesson whether it is correct articulation, using eye contact with friends, or topic maintenance. It is imperative that the student's can hear what is being said in the videos. The video will show the students how they look from another's perspective and give them a chance self-reflect on how they can improve, be it elevating the tongue for a better /r/ or conscientiously being more involved in social conversation. They students can then type out their observations. They will learn to be more cognizant of the skills targeted for that video.
The microphone will allow them to hear, resulting in discrimination and self-correction of misarticulated sounds.
Both the microphone and keyboard will impact students' lives by allowing them to hear correct speech/language as well as type out their thoughts which lends itself to demonstrating command of the conventions of standard English when writing or speaking (Language Content Standard). Above all, I hope this project will positively influence communication skills and increase confidence
