Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school is located in a neighborhood in Bridgeport, CT. The school serves students that come from low-income households, in which 100% of students are eligible for free lunches. In the last few years, students have had a significant lack of learning math due to very high rates of math teacher absenteeism. As a result, many 7th and 8th grade students test at a 3rd or 4th grade level.
Regarding state testing, only 3% of all students at Columbus School attained proficiency in mathematics.
Although students face this unfortunate situation, they are still eager to learn math, be proficient, and succeed.
My Project
Each day of school has an intervention period where my 7th or 8th grade students in my class get to go on an interactive math program to gain knowledge in math concepts they might not have learned in previous years. I assign specific programs/concepts for each student so that they each have their own unique path to follow.
During intervention, students like to hear what the interactive program is explaining, but I do not have headphones to provide them with so they are not disrupting others.
Being able to hear the program will help them focus more on the task at hand and to reinforce learning. I also need a place to store the headphones and label them so that I can keep track of each headphone.
