Many of our students participate in a backpack food program to have food on the weekends, and our school offers a monthly food bank for the entire community, which many students' families use. We are diverse with Hispanic, Haitian, Philippine, and American families.
I teach at a Title I school in Southwest Florida with students from all walks of life who deserve the same opportunities as those from affluent families.
Our students are caring, considerate and hard working. Despite the low-income conditions, they deserve resources that will be current and interesting. Not being able to provide them the best is heartbreaking. Each year, as a new school year begins, I build the bonds that keep me inspired to do everything possible for them.
My Project
This project is requesting materials for various ongoing projects. There are several teacher books to help students code (program) with Python, a programming language that is used by many. In addition, there is a request for a Qball. This is a fun and interactive way for students to speak in class and be heard by all. Since I am in a computer lab, many times, my students are in rows and not able to easily speak to the whole class to share what they've learned or how to do something. The Qball will allow students to be heard by all. Finally, there is a request for Botley travel cases. This will allow me to store these robots in a safe way and allow for easy distribution to students considering there are so many extra parts. We can also take them to an outdoor area to use as well.
For some students, early exposure to coding will open doors they may have never known existed.
Coding exposes students to life skills including critical thinking and problem solving. Also, they learn to persevere in spite of challenges and accept failure as a challenge to try again.
