This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach second graders at a Title 1 school in Alabama. My elementary school has almost 1,300 students, with a majority on the free or reduced-price lunch program. Students who come from low socioeconomic homes have a more difficult time learning. Our school works hard to deliver our students a safe, stable learning environment. Despite where they come from, they are full of energy and have an eagerness to learn! They love to learn new things and get excited over the littlest thing! While they are at school, I make every effort to provide them with everything they need to be successful!
My Project
Research suggests that we retain 90% of what we hear, say, see, AND do. The amount retained declines rapidly if we are only attaining to one of those. I want to make my lessons multi-sensory - engaging more than one sense at a time. My goal is to teach using visual, auditory, tactile (touch), AND kinesthetic (movement) elements. Everyone learns in different ways, which is why multi-sensory teaching is effective for all students.
The magnetic boards, letters, and word builders will help students use all multi-sensory elements while deepening understanding of letters, sounds, and words.
The word building blocks will do the same, allowing students to snap the letters onto the base to form words and then switch out letter blocks to explore changing sounds in words to create new words. For students that are reading texts, they will use the highlighter tape (removable and reusable!) to draw attention to important words, spelling patterns we are learning, prefixes/suffixes, syllables, etc. The Hear Myself Phones allow students to hear themselves talk - these are perfect for discovering letter sounds, phoneme blending, and more! The Roll and Write Word Game allows children to build and sound out words as they combine beginning sounds on dice with ending sounds on the game board!
I have no doubt my students will retain 90% of what they learn with these materials!
