This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students come to school ready to learn and eager for what the day is to bring. Many of my students come from low-income families and this is their first real experience at school. Many of my kids have not been around other kids their age.
My kids started the year as eager 3-4 years old, ready to see what big school is all about.
The 18 students in my inclusion PreK class come from varying living circumstances but they are all eager to learn. Many of my students are from single-parent households or living with other relatives. For many of them they come to me not knowing how to write their name, or even identify the letters in their name. Instead they come with their desire to learn and ready hugs and smiles as they embrace school and learning.
These students are just getting the feel of school and I want them to look forward to coming to school and learn. In many cases, these students don't know how to share or how to express emotions they are feeling. Despite this, they are eager to learn, explore, experience, and discover the world around them.
My Project
Today, more than ever, it is so important that children learn to understand and self-regulate their emotions. As teachers, we have to help them understand how to control and regulate their emotions. Sometimes students need a calm, quiet spot to wind down and get their emotions and mind back under control. I want my students to know that all types of emotions are okay, we just need to learn how to manage them. The materials in this grant will give us the resources we need for a "calm corner" in the classroom, where a student can go to help get their mind and emotions back to a place where they are able to learn in the classroom, while learning more about themselves and their emotions!
They have big "happy" emotions like excitement or happiness; but they also can have big "unhappy" emotions like anger or sadness.
These emotions can sometimes get out of their control and can cause students to act out.
