Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are diverse, enthusiastic, and excited to start the new school year. They are 75% reduced lunch children who are always looking for new and innovative ways to learn.
My students deal with many obstacles before they come to school.
Some have issues with homelessness, yet arrive at school ready to learn and engage in the classroom. It is their escape from their homes that helps them to thrive in our ELA classroom.
As my mixed special needs and general education students begin seventh grade, they will have to accustom themselves to the new requirements of not only a different grade level, but of an ever changing world of requirements. They must take a high stakes test toward the end of the school year, and every possible tool that we can bring to their disposal can only lead to their success for this school year, and onto their academic career.
My Project
Having essential healthy snacks available for my students will help them to be more successful in our classroom. When students have low blood pressure and are feeling weak, it shows in their demeanor. They are unable to complete basic reading or writing tasks, and are easily distracted or overwhelmed. Having low calorie chips, cookies, fruit snacks, and nuts on hand will allow me to keep them full and focused! My students need the snacks requested as it gives them a level playing field with their classmates who can buy snacks during lunch, or who are able to bring bagged lunch. Many students stop at a nearby deli to pick up snacks, but my students who suffer from homelessness do not have that liberty. Having snacks in my classroom allows my students to inconspicuously stay behind when their classmates head to lunch to ask for something small to help them feel the same as those around them. During junior high school, comparisons between students dependent on what they own, to how they dress, to how they look, cements their understanding of themselves and the world. Supporting a student who is going through a difficult time with snacks available to them when they need is imperative for their success in their academic careers, and superseding the situation they have faced.
Helping my students succeed against hunger means that they can focus on succeeding in the classroom.
Having snacks on the ready would be a great resource to go to when my students enter my classroom.
