Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students attend a Title I school in the heart of a borough in New York. They are special needs students and English Language Learners which makes learning challenging. My students come from a variety of economic backgrounds with almost all of them receiving free or reduced priced lunch. The school's population is very ethnically diverse as well. We serve a rising number of new immigrants from Spanish speaking countries as well as Africa. Needless to say, students come to school with their own unique set of struggles and successes.
One thing they have in common, though, is their love for school and learning.
I hope to create an environment in school that is creative and innovative no matter their unique needs.
My Project
Proper nutrition is one of our very basic needs. Unfortunately, this need is not always met in my school. While our school provides free or reduced price lunch to the 90% of our students who qualify due to their socioeconomic status, many students arrive too late for breakfast in school or go home knowing that there will be no dinner in the evenings. This leads to poor grades and behavioral issues. Having dried fruits and nuts will allow the students to have a small healthy snack they can rely on.
Hunger has a devastating effect on students' ability to maintain attention and effort on the cognitively demanding work they experience in middle school.
Having healthy snacks will allow my students to be able to get a bit to eat to help them get through the day. They will be able to focus in class. They will also be provided a "snack bag" to take home in order to have something to eat in the evenings. These healthy snacks will provide the students some dignity and not expose their plights.
