As a teacher in a Title I school, many of my students come from poverty stricken, low-income homes. Some also are learning English as a second language and others have special needs. All of my students receive free breakfast and lunch at school. Some of my students live in a shelter or motels. Others are living with other families.
Despite these difficult circumstances, my students come to school eager to learn and explore.
They are fascinated with the new activities, opportunities, and experiences that I can provide for them. They have so much love to share with me and with each other. I want to be able to give them every opportunity to learn, grow, and succeed.
My Project
My students don't go home until about 4pm each day. That makes for a long day. Some of them may not have access to snacks at home and may not eat until dinner time. It is hard for them to focus if they are hungry in the afternoons.
Healthy snacks such as cereal bars and pretzels will help my students have energy and be able to focus in the afternoon!
These snacks will also help them learn to make good choices about what to eat for a snack, instead of grabbing cookies or candy when they are hungry. It is important that I am able to care for the whole child; not just teaching them to read, but making sure they have healthy food to give them fuel for their activities.
