This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I work in a school that serves a large English Language Learner community. Most of our students come from economically disadvantaged homes. What makes my students special is that a lot of them speak another language at home and have parents who don't speak English at all. Despite these obstacles they come to school daily ready and eager to learn.
As the sponsor of the Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl team at my school I would like to provide snacks for our students.
I want to make after school snack one less thing their parents have to pay for when they join the reading bowl team. Most of our kids receive free or reduced price lunch and when we have after school meetings most of them don't have a snack.
My Project
Food is important and it is how we get our energy to think and process information. My students are often hungry after school and need a snack before we start Reading Bowl practice. Reading Bowl is a competition where students read books and answer detailed questions about the books. So it is important that they are ready to learn when we start practice.
Providing healthy snacks before Reading Bowl practice will teach students how to nourish their bodies to improve their brains.
They will learn better when their bodies have energy. Students will be given snack at every practice. We will briefly discuss how healthy diets help our brains work better at our first practice.
