This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I am a school counselor at a Title I school in a socioeconomically disadvantaged middle school in Philadelphia. I’m so proud of all my students and how resilient they are. Many come to school hungry, sad, angry, tired, with a rumble in their stomachs, which makes it difficult to learn, concentrate, and let their guard down. That's where you come in. With your support you could help me keep their bellies full, allowing for their success in school and eventually in life. All our students are provided with a free breakfast and lunch, but for some, it's not enough. Some students ask for extra breakfasts/lunches, as they report that they didn’t eat dinner or they need to take food home to feed their siblings. It’s really amazing how strong these young people are.

Food insecurity is a major issue for many of our students.

Having a variety of snacks in our Counseling office encourages our kiddos to come to school and get a snack while we talk about coping skills, future planning, and focusing on what we can control. As insignificant as a small snack is to us, to our students it’s sustenance and connecting with a trusted adult. My students know they can come to my office to ask for a snack without the fear of being judged or other students finding out that they are asking for food. Things like crackers, chips, cookies, beef jerky, and fruit snacks will provide the perfect snack for them. If you would consider donating, my kids would appreciate it so much! Thank you.
